Bloomsburg Rolls Over Houghton in Season Opener

BLOOMSBURG -- The Bloomsburg University field hockey team opened defense of its national championship with a 13-1 win over non-conference foe Houghton College on Saturday.

The Huskies wasted little time getting on the board as Maggey Bloskey (Danville/Danville) scored off a Jamie Vanartsdalen (Huntington Valley/Lower Moreland) assist just 1:31 into the game. Samantha Kropa (Tunkhannock/Lackawanna Trail) then scored back to back goals in a span of a minute and a half with Vanartsdalen assisting on one of the for a 3-0 Bloomsburg lead. Kropa would finish with four goals in the game.

Vanartsdalen scored the first of her two goals 17 minutes into the game, while Ashley Heckard (Millerstown/Greenwood) scored the first of her two goals six minutes later.

Also, scoring goals for the Huskies were Chelsea Due (Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl), Brieann Wolfe (Perkasie/Pennridge) and Aimee Sgarlat (Dallas/Lake-Lehman).

The lone goal for Houghton was scored by Ashley Hoffman on the team's only shot of the game.

Bloomsburg used three goalies in the game with Allison Ziants (Winfield/Selinsgrove) getting the start and playing the first half.

The Huskies, 1-0, will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 1st hosting Bryant College.
